Give Gallery 1412 some credit for providing an authentically avant-garde alternative to the Bumbershoot juggernaut this weekend, putting on a two-day mini-fest with a curatorial bent toward brain-burgling and texture-warped experimental music. The bills look to toggle smartly between “big name” local acts like ambient improv impresario Gel-Sol and glitch guru Marcus Price and smaller, even odder occupants of the scene. To name a few, discovered as a result of researching this event: Expert System and her spectral sound plazas, God and Vanilla’s malevolent symphonies, Slow Drips’ malfunction-scapes, and the demonic drone logic of Sacred Signs. Kremwerk’s experimental/noise-centered Squall night moves to fourth Fridays, and some A+sado-mathematicians are on tap to welcome it. Furniture Worship is the duo of Felicia Gaggins and Abraham Moses, whose towering obelisks of grit and rust seem to be aurally modeled after a sunburned Tatooine Sand Crawler. AJ Lindner, who goes by Cathartech, takes a gentler but no less frightening approach to sonic sculpting, using modular synthesizers to fashion dilated, paranoid frequencies of drone and feedback. Headliner R. Jencks has been plying his over-cooked analog negative-wave since the ’80s; his music’s a miasma of sound asthick, dark, and inescapable as a tar pit. It’s fun for the hole family. Kremwerk’s monthly Squall night continues to redeem that traditional wasteland of entertainment (i.e., Monday nights) with another strong lineup. Portland via Detroit synth master Matt Akers imbues his works with the icy grandeur of Tangerine Dream’s 1980s output, but he’s also capable of grinding out menacing industrial-dance numbers or punching out chiller-killer, John Carpenter–esque soundtrackage. He’s one versatile composer and his music possesses a rich tonal palette; one can see Akers working in Hollywood in the immediate future. Slumdiscs recording artist as-dfs is a mysterious entity whose Soundcloud doesn’t clarify matters. The music found there suggests an impish creative thrust that values spontaneity, oddly contoured rhythms, and unusual tonalities over functional, “logical” production techniques. Seattle’s Sacred Signs (aka Winter Parkin) combines subtly deranged drones with darkly folkish songcraft for a hybrid sound that’ll leave you profoundly confounded. DAVE SEGAL

The nascent Squall evening at Kremwerk is shaping up to be an essential convocation of noise- and drone-oriented musicians—even though its Monday 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. time slot is tough for working people to make. Nevertheless, this bill's worth delaying your dinner for.Cathartech (AJ Lindner) is a veteran treblemaker in the experimental scene whom I'd lost track of. My mistake. His recent work abounds with sublime, metallic drones that induce anedgy sort of meditativeness. Ffej is both a writer of cantankerous electro-rock songs and an experimental composer. We'll likely hear the latter side of his output tonight. Ffej's overlooked 2007 gem Patterns in the Storm recalls the infernal pulsations of Conrad Schnitzler and themalevolent atmospheres of Gil Mellé's Andromeda Strain soundtrack. NoisePoetNobody + Sisiutl's 2013 album Flecks of Mica combines hurdy-gurdy with stark, rippling modular analog synth emissions to form madly detailed and compelling drone constructions.
